Seattle is the most literate, best educated
city in the country. Over half of Seattlites 25 and older have 4-year
degrees. While some of this trend is the result of Seattle’s strong
desirability to highly educated new residents, a lot of credit can be
given to Seattle’s schools.
Seattle has 97 public schools and almost 50,000 students. Like
public schools in major cities everywhere, Seattle Public Schools are
not without difficulty, as shown in the current school closure debates.
Seattle is also served by a wide range of private grade schools, from
Montessori elementary schools to traditional religious private schools
and secular college prep schools like
Lakeside.
Seattle isn’t quite a “college town” in the way some cities like
Boston and Madison are, but college options are numerous and varied.
The
University of Washington was recently ranked by The Economist as
one of the top twenty universities in the world.
Seattle University is
an excellent regional Jesuit school and
Seattle Pacific University is a
strong Wesleyan college. Seattle has four community colleges, with
Seattle Central consistently ranking among the best community colleges
in the country.
