Pickathon X
WHAT: Pickathon X
WHEN: Aug. 1st-3rd
WHERE: Portland, Oregon
WHY: Everyone needs to cut some rug sometime.
Celebrating 10 years as the premier indie-roots music festival in the country, the 2008 Pickathon Roots Music Festival is taking place Aug.1-3rd at Pendarvis Farm in Portland, Oregon. Pickathon 2008 presents another eclectic, soulful juxtaposition of musical styles in its lineup — a forward thinking approach that has helped create and define the indie-roots movement. This year there are 35+ artists appearing on five stages, including two late-night venues.

Like Telluride and Bonnaroo, Pickathon started as a modest attempt to gather like-minded artists and fans. Over the past decade, it has blossomed into an influential event that has pioneered efforts in festival sustainability and environmental efforts while redefining what is thought of as “roots music.” The diverse selection of artists has exposed fans to musical styles they would likely never have encountered otherwise and nurtured the blending of traditional music with a more punk rock, DIY aesthetic — helping create the genre that’s become known as “indie-roots.”

The 10th annual Pickathon spotlights both established and emerging artists, with a great deal of excitement being focused on the reunion (off an 8 year hiatus) of the Bad Livers, who are undoubtedly one of the founding groups of the indie-roots culture.

Being on the cutting edge of emerging artists has been a returning focus for Pickathon. The festival has played a substantial role in the growing success of acts like The Avett Brothers, Langhorne Slim and Chatham County Line. This year it continues that tradition with the inclusion of artists like Justin Towns Earle, Red Stick Ramblers and Paleface. Photo by Tim La Barge

The growth of Pickathon follows an atypical path mainly due to the fact that focus of music is not based on any proven festival format (i.e. jam band, indie-rock, bluegrass, blues, etc.). The juxtaposition of artists and styles challenges the audience to experience new ideas, and in the early years this concept was something that kept the crowds small and local. Now as Pickathon enters its 10th year, the concept of indie-roots is attracting an international audience and is creating a year-round online appetite for related music, videos, and info.

Pickathon’s own roots in progressive Portland, Oregon have made sustainability and environmental accountability an important issue through its evolution. The festival grounds were planned for minimal environmental impact and Pickathon is proud to have an entirely solar-powered stage, as well as solar-powered medical tents, vendors and LED lighting. Bio-fueled generators fill in most other power needs. Recycling, composting, and the promotion of alternate transportation have long been a part of the agenda. Photo by Tim La Barge

Perhaps most excitingly, Pickathon’s partnership with local artisans GuildWorks in the use of portable, environmentally friendly shade and rain structures is breaking new ground in the site design and décor of outdoor events. The two entities have used their experience and expertise with Portland’s Waterfront Blues Festival and will be providing the same for this year’s Rothbury Festival.
