For the time being, Seattle is one of the elite cities with a major franchise in all of the “Big Three” sports: The NFL Seattle Seahawks, the Major League Seattle Mariners, and the NBA Seattle Supersonics. Locals refer to the teams as the “Hawks,” the “M’s,” and the “Sonics.” Unfortunately, the Supersonics were recently purchased by an Oklahoma investment group and their chances of staying beyond 2010 look slim (increased local purchases of season tickets wouldn’t hurt, though).
Other local teams include the minor league soccer Sounders, the women’s basketball Storm (also potentially headed to Oklahoma), and the minor league hockey Thunderbirds. Additionally, the University of Washington—nickname Huskies--is a perennial Division I football powerhouse and has recently seen increased basketball success. UW and the other local schools, Seattle Pacific University and Seattle University, also boast a wide range of other athletics. And while the Northwest is the lone region of the country not served by a NASCAR track, there is the somewhat quaint Evergreen Speedway for your amateur racing amusement.
